Oil and gas companies get more time to stop wasting natural gas on public lands
What happened
The US Land Management Bureau is giving oil and gas companies more time to meet rules designed to prevent them from wasting natural gas. Companies now have until 2027 to comply with requirements to capture or use gas that comes out of wells on public lands.
Why it matters
The rules were supposed to take full effect in 2025. This delay means companies can continue to vent or burn off natural gas for an additional two years without penalty. This effectively extends a subsidy for older, less efficient operations on public lands.
The signal
Watch for data on methane emissions from oil and gas operations on public lands in 2026 and 2027 to see if waste volumes remain high or increase.
