Italians trust AI more than Americans, but use it less
What happened
A new survey compares how people in Italy and the US use and feel about generative AI. It turns out Americans use AI more often, but Italians are more optimistic about what it can do for them. Both groups trust AI less than human services, but Italians trust their government more with AI and personal data.
Why it matters
Everyone assumed that how much people use a new technology would directly reflect their trust or optimism about it. This paper shows that isn't true. It means that just making AI available won't necessarily lead to widespread adoption if cultural factors or existing infrastructure aren't also addressed.
The signal
Watch for whether Italian AI adoption rates increase as their government or institutions integrate AI into public services, or if the gap with the US remains.
