Researchers analyzed 21 million questions on Stack Overflow and found that getting a quick answer makes newcomers much more likely to help other people later. But this reciprocity effect disappears almost entirely for experienced users, suggesting helping others is how platforms recruit new contributors, not how they sustain them. The effect is strongest when answers arrive within 30-60 minutes — fast enough to feel like an exchange, slow enough to be forgotten by the time someone starts browsing questions.
For years, platform designers assumed that helping others is a stable behavior driven by moral instinct and community identity. This paper shows reciprocity is actually a conversion tool that works only on newcomers. Once someone has invested time learning the platform's norms and reputation system, the impulse to reciprocate disappears — they're already committed. This means platforms that want to keep growing need a different strategy for retaining veteran helpers, and the speed of responses matters tactically in ways we couldn't measure before.
