The US aviation regulator wants to track more small wind towers. Owners of meteorological towers between 50 and 200 feet tall must now register them and mark them clearly.
For years, small towers used for wind data or other purposes did not need to be registered if they were under 200 feet. This meant pilots flying low, especially in agricultural areas, sometimes hit them. This rule change closes that gap, making it harder for these structures to be invisible to aircraft.
Watch for the number of newly registered towers in the FAA database in the first year after the rule takes effect.
