Railroads no longer have to file the same safety report twice
What happened
The US Federal Railroad Administration is cutting one of its safety reporting requirements for railroads. Railroads previously had to submit the same report twice a year and four times a year.
Why it matters
This change removes a redundant administrative burden for railroads. They still have to report the same safety data, but now only once per quarter instead of six times a year. This means less paperwork for railroad operators and for the agency that processes the reports.
The signal
Watch for any changes in the Federal Railroad Administration's enforcement actions or safety audits related to positive train control systems, to see if the reduced reporting frequency affects oversight.
