A Pennsylvania hospital heliport is gone, so its controlled airspace is too
What happened
The Federal Aviation Administration is removing a section of controlled airspace above Sunbury, Pennsylvania. This is because the Sunbury Community Hospital Heliport, which the airspace was designed to protect, has been abandoned.
Why it matters
Airspace is a finite resource, and every piece of controlled airspace restricts other aircraft from flying there without permission. When an airport or heliport closes, removing its associated controlled airspace frees up that part of the sky for other uses. This small change means pilots flying under visual flight rules in the area now have more flexibility.
The signal
Watch for other similar notices as smaller, older airfields and heliports close across the country, slowly freeing up low-altitude airspace.
