Gun background checks can now take twice as long, and forms can be digital
What happened
The US Justice Department wants to change how gun sales are recorded. It would double the time federal agents have to complete a background check, and let gun dealers use electronic forms.
Why it matters
For decades, gun dealers had three business days to complete a background check. If the check was not finished, they could sell the gun. This change would give federal agents six business days. It also makes it easier for dealers to handle paperwork, which could speed up sales for approved buyers.
The signal
Watch for how many gun sales proceed after the six-day mark, compared to the previous three-day rule.
