US nuclear regulators propose automatic expiry for old rules, unless someone saves them

US nuclear regulators want to add an automatic expiration date to many of their rules. This means that if a rule is not actively reviewed and renewed, it will simply disappear.

This proposal flips the burden of proof for regulations. Instead of a rule staying in place until someone proves it should be removed, now every rule must be actively justified to continue existing. This could make it easier to get rid of outdated rules that slow down new energy projects, but it also means that important safety or environmental protections could vanish if no one champions them.
