LNG plants might soon get automatic approval for minor changes
What happened
The US energy regulator is asking for public input on a plan to streamline approvals for small changes at liquefied natural gas plants. This means some plant modifications could get a green light without a full, case-by-case review.
Why it matters
Right now, every single change at an LNG plant, no matter how small, needs a specific approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This process is slow and expensive. If the rules change, it could make it much faster and cheaper to build out or modify existing LNG infrastructure, which could speed up the export of natural gas.
The signal
Watch for the final rule to see which specific activities are eligible for automatic approval and how quickly the first applications are processed under the new system.
