Gun parts that can be used for both hunting and combat weapons can now be imported more easily
What happened
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is making it easier to import gun parts that can be used for both sporting and non-sporting firearms. This means manufacturers can bring in frames, receivers, or barrels as long as they have at least one sporting configuration identified at the time of import.
Why it matters
This change clarifies a long-standing ambiguity in import rules for gun parts. Previously, parts that could be used in both hunting rifles and military-style weapons faced stricter import scrutiny. Now, as long as a part has a legitimate sporting use, it can enter the country, even if it could also be used for other purposes later.
The signal
Watch for an increase in the variety and volume of imported gun parts that fit both sporting and non-sporting firearms.
