A small Michigan airport can now use GPS for instrument landings
What happened
The Federal Aviation Administration updated the airspace around South Haven, Michigan. This means pilots flying into South Haven Regional Airport can now use satellite navigation for instrument landings.
Why it matters
For decades, pilots relied on ground-based radio beacons for instrument navigation. The US government is slowly decommissioning these older systems and replacing them with GPS-based procedures. This change means pilots flying in bad weather can still land at this airport, even without the old radio beacon.
The signal
Watch for similar airspace amendments as more ground-based navigation beacons are decommissioned across the country.
