Port security rules for ID card readers delayed another three years
What happened
The US Coast Guard has pushed back the deadline for certain port facilities to install security card readers. These facilities now have until May 2029 to comply with the rule, instead of May 2026.
Why it matters
This is the third delay for a rule that was first published in 2016. It means some port facilities will not have to spend money on new security equipment for another three years. The rule was meant to improve security by requiring readers for Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC) at certain sites.
The signal
Watch for any further delays or changes to the scope of facilities required to install these readers.
