Bangladesh can now issue carbon credits without UN approval

Bangladesh has created its own system for issuing carbon credits, separate from the United Nations. This means projects in Bangladesh can continue to earn money from carbon credits even after the old UN system ended.

For years, countries relied on the UN's Clean Development Mechanism to verify and issue carbon credits, but that system effectively ended in 2020. This left many projects without a way to finance their climate efforts. Bangladesh's new system provides a template for other developing countries to create their own national carbon markets, ensuring a continuous revenue stream for climate projects.
