AI can now map the deep ocean from surface observations alone

A new AI model can now reconstruct detailed 3D maps of the ocean's interior. It uses only sparse surface observations, like satellite data, to map temperature, salinity, and currents at various depths.

Mapping the deep ocean usually requires expensive ships and underwater sensors. This paper shows a way to get similar data using far fewer direct measurements. This could make it cheaper and faster to monitor ocean health and track climate changes.
