Small AI models can now diagnose skin conditions as well as big ones
What happened
Researchers built a new AI system to diagnose skin conditions using Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. This system performs as well as much larger AI models, even though it was trained on only 103 real patient cases.
Why it matters
Building powerful AI usually means feeding it massive amounts of data and compute power. This paper shows that a small, specialized AI can perform complex medical diagnoses just as well, using far less. This means AI tools for specific, data-scarce medical fields could become much easier and cheaper to develop.
The signal
Watch for other research teams to adopt this "multi-agent" approach for other specialized medical tasks, especially those with limited patient data.
