US health regulators received objections to their decision not to ban 28 types of phthalates from food packaging. They have now formally rejected those objections. This means these chemicals can continue to be used in materials that touch food.
Environmental and health groups have been trying to get these chemicals out of food packaging for years. They argue phthalates are linked to health issues, especially in children. This decision means manufacturers do not have to change their packaging materials. The chemicals will remain in the food supply.
