Alaskan cod season closes early for some jig fishermen
What happened
The US government has stopped some fishing for Pacific cod in a part of Alaska. This means boats using a specific type of gear, called jig gear, cannot catch cod in the Central Gulf of Alaska for the rest of the 2026 season.
Why it matters
This is a routine closure. Fisheries managers regularly stop fishing when a quota is met or about to be met. It does not change how fishing limits are set or how different types of gear are allocated their share of the catch.
The signal
Watch if the overall quota for Pacific cod changes in future years, or if the allocation to jig gear shifts significantly.
