Phone companies must now find and cut off the source of robocalls

The US communications regulator wants to tighten rules on phone companies to stop robocalls. Phone companies would have to track where calls come from and block those from known bad actors.

Robocalls remain a persistent nuisance despite years of regulatory efforts. This proposal shifts more of the burden onto phone companies to actively police their networks. It means they can no longer claim ignorance about the origin of illegal calls passing through their systems.
