US environmental regulators just tightened the rules for lead in drinking water. This means water systems must now replace all lead pipes, instead of just treating the water or monitoring for high levels.

For decades, cities could manage lead in water by adding chemicals or simply monitoring for high levels. This rule ends that approach. Now, every city with lead pipes must find the money and labor to dig them up and replace them.
