The US Department of Transportation is changing the rules for companies that ship hazardous materials. Companies will no longer have to apply for permit renewals exactly 60 days before expiration.
This small change removes a common administrative hurdle for companies that transport dangerous goods. Previously, if a company missed the 60-day window, even by a day, their permit could lapse, causing delays and fines. Now, they can apply for renewal at any point before the permit runs out.
Watch for a reduction in the number of lapsed permits and associated penalties reported by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
