Hazardous materials permits can now be renewed any time before they expire
What happened
The US Department of Transportation is changing the rules for companies that ship hazardous materials. Companies will no longer have to apply for permit renewals exactly 60 days before expiration.
Why it matters
This small change removes a common administrative hurdle for companies that transport dangerous goods. Previously, if a company missed the 60-day window, even by a day, their permit could lapse, causing delays and fines. Now, they can apply for renewal at any point before the permit runs out.
The signal
Watch for a reduction in the number of lapsed permits and associated penalties reported by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
