California fishermen can catch more healthy fish without hitting protected stocks

US fisheries regulators have changed rules for commercial and recreational fishing off California. Fishermen can now fish in different areas and catch more abundant fish species, while still protecting endangered ones.

Fishing rules often create a problem: healthy fish live in the same areas as protected fish. This means fishermen cannot catch enough of the healthy fish without accidentally catching too many of the protected ones.
