Car safety regulators will stop asking for data they no longer use
What happened
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to remove old reporting rules for car manufacturers. This means car companies will no longer have to submit data on safety features that are now standard.
Why it matters
For years, car manufacturers had to report on the phase-in of safety features like airbags and anti-lock brakes. These features are now mandatory in all new cars. Removing these obsolete reporting requirements cuts down on paperwork for manufacturers and for the agency.
The signal
Watch for the final rule to be published, and whether it includes any other minor reporting changes that were not initially proposed.
