Pipeline operators can now use a newer steel pipe standard

US pipeline safety rules now allow the use of a more recent industry standard for steel pipes. This means pipeline companies can use updated manufacturing and testing methods for their pipes.

Pipeline operators have to follow specific rules about the materials they use. When those rules are tied to old standards, it means they cannot use newer, potentially better, or cheaper materials and methods. This update removes one such constraint, allowing them to use a standard from 2018 instead of one from 2012.
