A new blue food dye is now allowed in almost everything
What happened
US health regulators have approved a new blue food coloring, galdieria extract blue, for use in a wide range of foods and drinks. This means manufacturers can now use this plant-based blue dye in products from sodas to ice cream, starting in June 2025.
Why it matters
Food companies have been looking for natural blue dyes that are stable and vibrant. Many existing natural blues are either not very bright or break down easily. This new approval gives them another option, which could lead to more naturally colored blue foods on shelves.
The signal
Watch for new blue-colored products appearing in grocery stores after June 2025, especially in categories like beverages, candies, and dairy desserts.
